New Year’s resolutions usually involve health and finances – but what about your home?

If you are planning a home remodel, here are five regrets to avoid.

Regret 1: Not enough planning

Most homeowners take between 12 and 36 months to start their remodeling project. By the time they find a remodeler they like, the homeowner can be impatient wanting to get started right away. Problems begin when deliveries and worker’s schedules clash causing delays leading to cost increases. A well-planned and scheduled remodel minimizes many potential interruptions for a smoother process.

Regret 2: Too much DIY

Many homeowners do a certain level of home improvements themselves for smaller projects -changing plumbing fixtures, adding a backsplash, or installing a new sink. When they decide to do a slightly bigger project (like installing a walk-in shower) in the end, they hire a remodeler. Large and complex projects are best left to the professionals!

Regret 3: Hiring a bad contractor

When a homeowner becomes impatient and wants the project done, it is easy to dismiss contractor warning signs. Angie’s List has 10 signs of a bad contractor who can help you avoid a costly mistake of hiring someone who is unlicensed or unqualified. A good rule of thumb – when hiring a contractor trust your intuition and do not hire someone who gives off a bad vibe and does not act professionally.

Regret 4: Not hiring a home designer

Designers will help you avoid creating a trendy space that is outdated in a couple of years. Hiring a designer prevents you from making style gaffes, helps you identify what appeals to you, and give you additional ideas to make your home functional and beautiful.

Regret 5: I didn’t get what I really wanted

Do the remodel right the first time. If you are living in your forever home, or one where you can see yourself living in for five years, go for what you want and have it done the correct way. Remodeling is a major life event, and life is too short not to have what you want in your home.
